View Bronx River Feb 4th 2012 in a larger map
I had a huge amount of work to do this weekend, so I decided to go very local and close to home . Why I have not been on the Bronx River before is a mystery to me. I looked over the sat. photos for a launch spot , and Soundview Park looked like the best bet. After some cruising around (most of the park in inaccessible in a vehicle) , I finally put in in a less than perfect spot, where I had to drag the kayak a short distance over a pretty rough, trashy track. Of course, during my paddle I noted two perfectly good put in spots on the western side of the river.
The paddle itself was good. After only a short time - about an hour (including many stops for photos) I came across a trash boom which appeared to block my way. Fortunately, there on the bank at Concrete Park, was Damien, Education director for the Bronx River Alliance who told me I just needed to approach the boom at speed and I could go over it.
I did a little try out, and worked out a little more speed that I used would definitely work, but as my time was not my own this weekend, I decide to turn around and go home back to work. I will certainly go out and get further up the river in the next couple of weeks.
It was as one can imagine, it was a very urban paddle.
